Health Care Concerns – Alberta Health Services

– Many non-emergent sport and personal injuries are evaluated at the emergency department when they are not truly emergencies. This causes significant unnecessary use of emergency department resources

– Following many injuries, MRIs are often scheduled, when in many cases a diagnosis can be formulated without an MRI. This creates unnecessary use of costly MRI and other investigations

– In follow-up, repeat x-rays or MRIs are often performed as there may be a number of physicians involved in the care of musculoskeletal injuries. This frequently causes duplication of costly investigations such as CT scans, MRIs and MRI arthrograms.

– Patients often have to wait a number of days before being evaluated following an injury. This also creates a delay in beginning treatment for the injury. This leads to increased work days lost due to inefficient evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of muscle and joint injuries.

– The normal delays in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of muscle and joint injuries are often frustrating. Dissatisfied patients are frequently the result of these evaluation and treatment delays
